You should see more posts back here on my blog now

I’ve been extremely busy writing for ZDNet and Geek and haven’t had much time to blog here. However, there are so many things going on in my mobile life that can’t necessarily be covered on either of those sites that I decided to try blogging here more now. I also have been inundated with spam on this blog and found moderating the comments tiring. I just installed a new spam filter that should hopefully cut down spam comments and I’m sorry if I purged one of your comments recently and if so, please post again.

I just received a Nokia N93 and N73 to evaluate as part of the Nokia Nseries Blogger Relations program and also just picked up a T-Mobile Dash a couple a couple days before that. So there are quite a few devices in my arsenal right now that I am checking out. I took the N93 with me to a soccer game and basketball tryout and used it to take some great videos. I am impressed by the N93′s video capability, but the form factor and photo quality of the N73 is almost even more enticing to me. It sure is fun playing with all these devices and the danger ends up spending too much time with them. I wish I could do this full time since it is a blast playing with toys :)

Back from trips back East, undefeated soccer teams, etc.

I was in New York City for several hours and then headed north to Boston for Mobius 2006. BTW, you can check out my report here on Geek.com.

I enjoyed NY and attended the Nokia Open Studio event where they announced lots of devices, including the N95 and N75. I want the N95 and I want to get my wife the N75 for Christmas. I then visited the Apple store and swung by the Nokia Flagship store, but that one was closed and I could not convince anyone to let me in.

I received some cool gear at Mobius and was using the super slim Samsung SGH-i320 the last couple weeks, but the battery life stinks so I am going to give it away on a contest on my ZDNet blog. If you are on T-Mobile then enter the contest to win this cool prize. Cingular customers shouldn’t enter because it doesn’t support the 850 MHz band. I was going to go buy a T-Mobile Dash (HTC Excalibur) today, but T-Mobile just faked us out with the announcement since they won’t be available for another 2 weeks. I wonder if I can sweet talk any T-Mobile managers to sell me one from the back :)

I’ll be traveling to Hawaii for work here in less than 2 weeks and taking my wife and oldest daughter along. Speaking of my daughters, my oldest and youngest daughters soccer teams are both undefeated. I coach my youngest daughter’s team and we are having a blast this year. They have improved 1000% over last year and it is lots of fun.

The Nokia N91 is turning me into a podcatching nut

I recently received the Nokia N91 to evaluate as part of the NSeries Blogger Relations program and have to say that the device is turning me into a crazed podcast listener. I already was a big fan of podcasts, but hated having to setup and use iTunes on any desktop I happened to be using and then transfer the podcasts to my devices via a sync cable or card reader. Nokia released a free podcasting application that allows you to browse directories or enter your own links and then download podcasts right to the 4GB hard drive of the device. I quickly found all my favorites in the directory and then actually started browsing the directories and trying out lots of other podcasts that I may never have found before. I am still trying to determine which are my favorites and which ones will stay loaded on the device and I am having a great time listening to the audio.

I definitely have the MobileTechRoundup podcast that I am now helping host loaded on the device and I have to admit I sound a bit better than I thought I would and I am sure I’ll grow more comfortable and get better over time. We just finished recording my second show that should be going live tomorrow and I again touch on some S60 topics.

If you have a podcast you think I may enjoy (gadget related, Christian (I love the Mars Hill Church feeds), sports, etc.) feel free to send a link my way.

I am now putting aside my Nokia E61 to try and use the N91 only for my testing and review for at least a week. If you haven’t seen one of these N91 devices, it may be worth checking one out in person since the quality is amazing and it is a very classy device. The solid metal feel and cool kepad slider, high quality audio playback, smooth rounded buttons, good quality 2 megapixel camera, and high quality phone features make this a very good choice if podcasts or music is important to you.

I still love the Nokia N90 high quality camera

I have been having major boat electrical problems and until the manual I ordered on ebay arrives I have been going to the library and looking through their copy of the manual. Unfortunately, it is in the reference section and cannot be checked out so I can just take notes or photocopy pages. The problem is that I keep forgetting to take coins with me (I never carry them in my pocket) so I can’t make photo copies. Well, I had the brilliant idea to take along the N90 one day and took some amazing close-up shots of the wiring diagrams and then printed them out at home. The N90 has an awesome camera and I actually have been taking it along with me for a camera and video camera rather than taking my dedicated Pentax digital camera and Sony digital camcorder.

I am even more interested in the Nokia N93 now since it is like the N90 with a high quality Carl Zeiss optics camera (now at 3.2 megapixel), but also adds WiFi, S60 3rd Edition (the browser and new PIM software is MUCH better than 2nd Edition), and vibration. The major feature missing from the N90 that prevents me from using it as a daily smartphone is the lack of vibration since our phones have to be on silent at work and I missed way too many calls without vibration functionality. If the N93 has this, then this is the S60 cameraphone for me and I may have to hunt one down and try it out. Then again, the 4GB drive on the N91 sure is nice for storing podcasts and media.

The first MoTR show with me in it is now live!

MoTR podcast number 54 is now available for listening and yours truly is the new 3rd host. They go through an intro section and then we move on to discuss a few more things like the new Microsoft iPod killer, Nokia N91, and Nokia podcatching application. I am just listening to it myself and look forward to improving and getting better as the shows go on. Please let me know what you think and also pass along any ideas for future shows you may have. Thanks and enjoy.

Mobile devices taken on the road to Duluth

I dropped my trailer and family off on Saturday at one of our camping resorts and then headed out to Duluth, Minnesota for a couple days for business. I packed along the Q1 UMPC, Nokia E61, Nokia N91 (I just received one to test out), and Sony UX50 Micro PC.

I actually used the Q1 to conduct the stability test and plot the curves using the beta Office Pro 2007. I did have some issues with getting the Think Outside Bluetooth keyboard to pair correctly consistently and also no longer have the ability to change screen resolutions. When I tried to reinstall everything after buying the Q1 (wanted to get rid of reviewer’s junk) I didn’t have an external DVD drive and tried to make it work with the CF slot. I think there were things missing though and am in the process of bidding on a Targus external DVD/CD right now and will reinstall and start from scratch again.

I brought the UX50 and after using it for a couple days I am happy I bought the Samsung unit. The UX50 display is just too small for Windows, the keyboard is a bit too wide, and there is no Tablet PC OS installed. Also Sony loaded lots of junk on the device, whereas the Samsung Q1 has a very minimal amount of 3rd party and proprietary apps loaded on it. The UX50 is definitely a piece of quality hardware, but it is not for me personally.

The E61 worked well, of course, but I couldn’t get any T-Mobile data to work. A couple of times it seemed to work and my email got through, but it was sporadic and mysterious as to why that worked.

The N91 was awesome for listening to podcasts on the airplane and I’ll chat a bit more about that later.

Sony VAIO UX50, Nokia N91, and more in the Geek.com Labs

Boy, last night felt like Christmas with a Sony VAIO UX50, Nokia N91, and Battery Geek Portable Power Station box on at my house after work. I have my work cut out for me as I get to reviewing this and much more for Geek.com. I posted some initial impressions that will go up on a Geek.com Labs entry later this afternoon. I have to say that the Sony is very impressive, but so far I actually like the Q1 UMPC better for a few reasons that I’ll post about on one of my other blogs. It sure is fun being a product reviewer and writer, except for the lack of time to sleep :)

Samsung Q1 is new object in the house

I have been posting more on my ZDNet blog and just returned from a couple of days of travel to the East Coast. Check out my blog entries there for some thoughts on the Samsung Q1 UMPC.

BTW, I still LOVE the Nokia E61 and find it to be a better device for me than the Treo 650.

Nokia E61 one week impressions

My Treo 650 is now gone and a few other devices and accessories are up for sale as I settle in with the Nokia E61. I posted a small two part series on ZDNet relating some experiences with the device, Part 1 and Part 2. As you can see I am quite impressed with the device and am now hunting down some 3rd party applications that I can use, such as a Bible.
