Focusing my attention on future mobile devices

I have decided to require that the next mobile device that I purchase will have phone functionality and a thumb keyboard. This will help eliminate many options that may entice me into a spur of the moment purchase and help focus me on what I really want. I am a HUGE thumb keyboard fan and really won’t be fully happy with anything less. The Treo 650 really sets the standard for a design I personally prefer, but with a Palm Cobalt and/or Windows Mobile version rumored to be coming in the next few months I won’t go for the current 650. I will evaluate and review the Wizard and may go for that only if the thumb keyboard integration is better than it has been in the past. I already played with the HTC Universal and know I will be passing up that device since I do not like the flatness and size of the keyboard.

That’s interesting you say that. I see the HTC as too large for many people (at lest those that dont want to do the man-purse or belt buckle..errr clip thingy).

I am personally considering a 650 even with the knowledge that a new Treo is right around the corner. I am finding that I want to carry my phone less in relation to having wireless web and email. My T5 is nice too, but sometimes just an extra carry with the cable having to be near for work or other places.

    Antoine,

The HTC Wizard is about the size of a Treo 650. Are you thinking about the HTC Universal? If so, I agree that thing is too big and I didn’t like the keyboard when I played with it a couple months ago. The Wizard is just a bit thick than the JAM and has a cool sliding keyboard.

Yeah, that Treo 650 form factor is tough to beat, but I prefer the syncing reliability in ActiveSync and Outlook with Windows Mobile devices and like the true multitasking better. That said, I have debated several times about picking up a Treo 650 since the hardware is so dang awesome.

Man, I REALLY like the Wizard! It looks like a great combo.

My interest in mobile gear is with the enterprise in mind and I really feel than most enterprise users need to have a keyboard of some kind. If you have it for e-mail of order entry or CRM you will need to type. Most users are not going to be a whiz with Fitaly and should have a usable keyboard.

The wizard, for me, seems to be the best compromise currently. It is small (although a little thick) and the keyboard tucks away nicely. With the keyboard in you aren’t going to feel like you have a Day Timer up to your ear. 😉

I like the Treo form factor as well but am just to stuck on the flexibility of WM. On my wireless network at home I regularly have Skype, Inbox, PIE, GSPlayer (mp3) and sometimes Messenger. You just can’t do that with Palm OS.

The Universal looks fantastic and would be a great conversation starter but with the size of it there are a lot of points lost. I take my PocketPC with me everywhere and the Universal would drag my shorts down a little too low. 🙂

Ah, you are right, I was thinking universal. Seen a ton of it on de web lately. Thanks for the correction.
